Within the wide spectrum of Southern African stamps and postal history, there is scope for specialised collecting and study.  A number of specialist study circles and interest groups cater for such areas, and most publish journals or circulars.

Anglo-Boer War Philatelic Society.  All aspects of the war of 1899-1902 :  soldiers’ mail and field post offices, prisoner of war letters, censorship markings, local stamp issues, temporary postmarks, damaged mail, concentration camp letters, mail from prisoner of war camps abroad in Bermuda, Ceylon, India and St Helena, internee mail from Portugal.  The Anglo-Boer War Philatelist, quarterly.

The Bechuanalands and Botswana Society.  All aspects, Stellaland and British Bechuanaland included.  The Runner Post, three times a year.

Cape and Natal Study Circle.  Prestamp postal history, stamp issues, postmarks, postal routes and rates, including Basutoland (pre-1910), Griqualand West and Zululand.  Cape and Natal Journal, quarterly.

Filatelisten Vereniging Zuidelijk Afrika.  All aspects of South and South West African philately.  Meets quarterly in the Netherlands.  Quarterly journal Bartolomeu Dias.

Military Mail Study Group.  Informal get-togethers. 

Orange Free State Study Circle.  All aspects of the Orange Free State and Orange River Colony.  The Orange Free State Bulletin, quarterly.

Philatelic Society for Greater South Africa.  All aspects of Southern Africa.  Based in the United States.  Forerunners, journal published three times a year.

Postcard Society of South Africa.  Southern African picture postcards, particularly from the period 1900-1930.  Newsletter. 

Postmark and Postal History Society of South Africa.  Postal markings.  The Postal Stone, irregular periodical.

Rhodesian Study Circle.   British South Africa Company, British Central Africa, Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, Nyasaland, Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, Zimbabwe.  The Rhodesian Study Circle Journal, quarterly.

RSA-Studiegroep.   South Africa since 1961, in-depth study of the stamp issues.  Newsletter 11 times per year.

South African Collectors’ Society.  South Africa from 1910, all aspects.  Based in the United Kingdom.  The Spingbok, three times a year.

South Africa Stamp Study Circle.  Union and Republic of South Africa. 

South West Africa Stamp Study Group.   German South West Africa, mandated territory and later periods, Namibia.  Electronic newsletter.

Thematics SA.  Thematic and subject collecting.  Monthly newsletter.  Quarterly journal, ThemNews,

Transvaal Study Circle.  Transvaal republic and colony, including New Republic and Swaziland (pre-1910).  The Transvaal Philatelist, three times a year.

TBVC study group.  Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda, Ciskei stamps and postmarks (1976-1994).  Information sheets on specific issues and subjects.
